South Korea is focusing on the production of fuel cell electric vehicles and aims to produce more than 810,000 such vehicles by 2022. South Korea leads the E-mobility index for technology in 2021's ranking. It is estimated that between three and 3.5 million electric vehicles were in use across China in 2019. After beginning to roll back subsidies for electric vehicles, China fell behind in terms of electric vehicle market size, although China was the world's largest automotive market in 2020. The E-mobility index uses three key indicators to compare the competitive positions of some of the leading automotive sales markets worldwide: technology, industry, and market. China was the leading country for the technological development of electric vehicles, whereas Germany scored highest in terms of current customer demand. China and Germany are the countries at the forefront of the transition to electric mobility.
